Elon Musk, the owner of major tech companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, is often in the headlines. Sometimes for new electric car models, sometimes for rocket launches, and sometimes for his social media platform X (formerly Twitter). But this time, the reason Elon Musk has captured the world’s attention is his entry into American politics.

In 2025, Musk surprised everyone with his political move. He announced the formation of his own new party, named the “America Party.” This move has created a stir in American politics, as it is rare for a tech billionaire to enter electoral politics directly.

The Launch of the America Party

Elon Musk conducted a poll on his social media platform X in July 2025 and subsequently announced the “America Party.”

  • Why did he announce the party?
It all started with a major federal spending bill. This bill was supported by the Donald Trump administration and passed by Congress. Musk believed this bill would further increase the country’s debt.
  • Musk’s accusation
He called both Democrats and Republicansuni-party.” Meaning, he said that both parties together waste government money and promote corruption.

Stake in the Wisconsin Supreme Court Election

Musk had already become active in politics before the new party was formed. The Wisconsin Supreme Court election was held on April 1, 2025, in which Musk supported Republican-backed candidate Brad Schimel.

  • Record Spending
Musk spent over $25 million on this election, making it the most expensive judicial election in US history.
  • Musk’s Vision
He stated that the “future of Western civilization was tied to the outcome of this election. This court would play a crucial role, particularly on issues like abortion rights and redistricting.
  • Result
Musk’s gamble failed. Brad Schimel lost, and liberal candidate Susan Crawford won. Following this defeat, many questioned whether Musk’s political influence was limited solely to money.

Friendship and then Distance With Trump

Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s relationship also made headlines in 2025.

  • Support for Trump
Musk openly supported Trump in the 2024 presidential election. He donated millions of dollars to his campaign, and after winning the election, Trump even appointed Musk as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
  • Resignation from DOGE
Musk left this position within a few months.
  • Dispute over the Spending Bill

The real controversy began when Trump passed the spending bill. Musk publicly criticised it, saying it would cause the country’s debt to skyrocket.

  • Souring Relationship

After this, the distance between Musk and Trump grew. Although Musk initially funded Republican-backed groups, he soon formed his own party.

Why is it Difficult to Form a Third Party?

American politics has long been based on a two-party system, comprising the Democratic and Republican parties. Therefore, the success of a third party is considered almost impossible.

  • Legal Challenges

American election laws are stringent. To gain national recognition, a party requires thousands of signatures and funding in multiple states.

  • Money Limit
Even a billionaire cannot single-handedly fund an entire party because the Election Commission has imposed strict limits on donations.
  • Party Loyalty
American voters tend to remain loyal to their old parties. Democrats dislike Musk, and Republicans still lean toward Trump.
  • The Problem of “Vote Waste”
People who vote for a third party are often told that their vote will be wasted, because only candidates from the two major parties have a realistic chance of winning.

What will be Musk’s Next Move?

  • 2026 Midterm Elections
Musk has hinted that the US Party will field candidates in next year’s midterm elections.
  • Super PAC
If forming a party proves difficult, Musk has the option of a Super PAC. He can invest unlimited funds in it and support independent candidates.
  • Social Media Power
His presence on the X platform gives him the most significant advantage. Millions of people read his posts, and this is his biggest strength.

Can Musk Become President in 2028?

The clear answer to this question is No.
The US Constitution states that only a “natural born citizen” can become president. That is, someone born in the United States. Musk was born in South Africa and became a US citizen in 2002. Because of this, he is ineligible to become president.

Nevertheless, Musk’s efforts have made it clear that he will remain a significant part of American political discourse for years to come. Whether the party succeeds or not, his presence will be felt until the 2026 elections.
