India is often referred to as the world’s largest democracy. Here, general elections are held every five years, and crores of people choose the government with their votes. However, the recent revelation of vote theft and electoral irregularities has prompted ordinary people to question whether their vote is truly secure.
Voter list irregularities
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently said in a press conference that living people are declared dead and dead people are shown as alive in the voter list. Not only this, but hundreds of people were found to be registered at the same address in multiple locations. For example, in Karnataka’s Mahadevpura assembly constituency alone, there was an allegation of the entry of more than 1 lakh fake voters.
A total of 6.5 lakh votes were cast in this area. That is, 1 out of every six votes can be suspicious. Congress claims that this was the reason why the party had to face defeat in this seat despite winning in other places.

Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh case
Not only in Karnataka, but questions were also raised about the elections in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. During the Maharashtra assembly elections, approximately one crore new voters were added, whereas in the Lok Sabha elections held a few months ago, this number was significantly lower. The significant difference was surprising to the people.
In Madhya Pradesh, too, the opposition alleged that lakhs of new voters were suddenly added. Statistics show that more than 16 lakh new names were added to the list in just a few months. The question is, how can so many people turn 18 at the same time?
Why is CCTV footage being removed?
The Election Commission installs CCTV cameras at every polling booth. Its purpose is transparency so that any irregularities can be investigated later. But the Commission ordered that the footage be destroyed 45 days after the election. Many journalists and activists asked the reason for this by applying RTI, but did not get a clear answer.
People say that if everything is correct, then why is the footage being removed? At the same time, the Commission argued that there is an issue of women’s privacy in the CCTV footage. But the truth is that there is no private atmosphere at the polling booth; the cameras there only show the voting process.
Role of the BJP government
Parties opposing the BJP allege that the Election Commission is working under pressure from the government. An example of this is the process of appointment of Election Commissioners. The Supreme Court had ordered that the appointment should be done by a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice. However, the government introduced a new law, removed the Chief Justice, and appointed a Union Minister. Now two members are from the government and one from the opposition, which has disturbed the balance.
Many people believe that when the government influences the election conducting body, fair elections cannot be expected.
Challenge of the opposition and legal path
According to the law, any person can file a petition in the High Court within 45 days of the announcement of the election results. But the real problem is with the evidence. When the evidence itself is destroyed, such as CCTV footage or deleted voter data, it becomes difficult to proceed with any case. This is why the opposition often raises this issue through press conferences or public demonstrations.
Tangible impact on the public
Now, the question is, what impact does it have on the commoner? The truth is that the vote is the only power that every citizen has. Whether someone is rich or poor, educated or illiterate, one vote is equal for everyone. However, if this vote is used fraudulently or someone’s name is removed from the list, the foundation of democracy is compromised.
At many places, people complained that their names were removed without any prior notice. At the same time, in some places, the names of the dead are still present. It is clear from this that the work of correcting the voter list is not being done seriously.
What is the solution? The Reality Of Vote Chori & BJP Government
The solution is simple – transparency. If the Election Commission is truly impartial, then it should make the voter list, CCTV footage, and data publicly available. Using technology, every citizen should be given the facility to check their name and address online, making it easy for them to verify their information.
Apart from this, the appointment of election commissioners should also be done by a balanced committee so that there is no pressure from any one party.
Questions on the BJP government
The BJP government itself has not been able to escape the allegations of vote theft. Whether it is the case of the same person casting their vote repeatedly in UP or the incident of deliberately marking on the ballot paper in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections, all these have affected the government’s image.
However, the BJP claims that the opposition is making excuses to conceal its defeat. However, the doubts in people’s minds will only end when the entire process becomes transparent and trustworthy for everyone.
Friends, the news of vote theft and electoral irregularities is not just the fight of political parties. This is an issue directly related to the rights of every citizen. If the trust in the vote ends in democracy, then the entire system will become hollow.
It is the responsibility of both the BJP government and the Election Commission to prove transparency and impartiality. It is also the responsibility of the opposition to adopt a legal and constitutional path, rather than merely making statements.
After all, this is not just a fight between Congress and the BJP. This is a fight for your votes and ours. Democracy will be strengthened only when every citizen’s vote is counted and a true people’s government is formed.
