Bannu, a city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, faced another deadly attack this week when militants targeted the Federal Constabulary (FC) headquarters. The event happened early on 2 September 2025, starting with a suicide bomber crashing a vehicle loaded with explosives into the compound’s wall. The blast made a hole that let armed militants rush in, leading to a fierce gunfight that lasted almost twelve hours.

Official reports say that six soldiers lost their lives in the fight, while security forces took down at least six attackers. More than a dozen personnel and several civilians were also hurt during the clash. Rescue teams worked in stressful conditions, taking the injured to nearby hospitals as the area was filled with gunfire and explosions.

This attack is not a one-time event. Bannu and nearby areas have seen a troubling increase in militant actions throughout 2025. Earlier in March, a terrible suicide bombing hit the Bannu Cantonment, killing over a dozen people, including children and soldiers.

In May, three security personnel died during an operation against a militant hideout in the same area. These repeated attacks show the growing difficulties faced by Pakistan’s security forces in keeping the northwestern region safe.

The government has strongly condemned the attack, calling it part of a larger plan to create chaos in the area. Security experts, however, point out that these events indicate a comeback of militant groups who are taking advantage of weaknesses in intelligence and border security. While officials have suggested that these groups have outside support, there is little independent proof of such claims.

For the people of Bannu, these attacks have become a painful part of life. Markets close early, schools stop classes, and fear spreads throughout the district as the battle at the FC compound continues.

A group linked to the TTP has taken responsibility for suicide bombings in Bannu Cantonment that resulted in 9 deaths and 25 injuries. A terrorist attack hit a security compound in northwest Pakistan, leading to an urgent emergency response.

On 4 March 2025, two suicide bombers set off explosives close to the outer wall of Bannu Cantonment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of at least nine people, including six children, and left more than 25 others injured.

An extremist group connected to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) took responsibility for the attack, which was a planned strike on the military area.

After the first explosions, the attackers tried to break into the compound. Fortunately, security forces were able to stop all the attackers, but it took several hours to carry out rescue operations for civilians who were trapped.

  • Casualties: Nine people have died, including six children, and more than 25 others are hurt, with some victims trapped under the rubble of a mosque.
  • Two suicide bombings happened, and then there was an attempt to break in with weapons. About 5 to 6 attackers were killed.
  • An emergency has been announced at the District HQ Hospital and Bannu MTI, and they are currently carrying out clearance operations.
  • TTP-related groups have stepped up their attacks in KPK since the ceasefire broke down in 2022.

The blasts caused part of a mosque next to the military base to fall, leaving some people stuck under the debris. Rescue workers spent hours trying to save those trapped while hospitals rushed to help the injured.

Dr. Farid Khan, who is in charge of Bannu District Headquarters Hospital, said, “We have 13 patients in serious condition, including women and kids. Our staff is working hard, but we are focusing on saving lives.”

A military spokesperson stated that the security forces successfully fought off the attackers following the suicide bombings. “Two bombers got through the outer wall, but our troops quickly responded and took out the rest of the attackers,” said Maj. Ahmed Ali, who represents the Pakistan Army. He did not provide any information about whether any soldiers were hurt or killed.

TTP’s Claim

A group connected to the TTP, Junud-e-Khalifa, said they were behind the attack in a message on Telegram. They promised to keep attacking “state installations.” The TTP has been active in Pakistan’s tribal areas since 2007 and has increased violence after peace talks with the government fell apart last year.

Security expert Ayesha Siddiqa pointed out that Bannu is close to the Afghanistan border, making it an important area for militant actions. She emphasized that this attack shows how weak the progress against terrorism is in that region.

Bannu Cantonment is an essential military base close to the Afghan border and has been attacked many times in the last ten years. The area is still unstable because of fighters moving across the border and old tribal conflicts.

Pakistan has been working hard to fight against terrorism with operations like Zarb-e-Azb in 2014 and Radd-ul-Fasaad in 2017. These efforts have weakened the militant groups but haven’t eliminated them.

The recent attack shows that there are ongoing security problems in northwestern Pakistan. This raises worries about militants coming together again, especially with the current political and economic issues.

Experts say that if there isn’t strong teamwork in fighting terrorism in Afghanistan and better sharing of information, these attacks could get worse. The government has promised to strengthen border security and speed up development projects in KPK to help fight against radicalization.
